Family Support
What is Family Support?

Family Support strives to maintain the integrity of families caring for an individual with an intellectual disability. Supports are tailored to each family and will vary according to the specific needs.

Supports may include:
  • providing planning tools and assistance in areas such as school transitions, transitioning to adult services, estate, short, long-term, emergency and summer planning

  • advocating with parents on the family member's behalf

  • assisting with funding applications including researching, brokering and advocating

  • liaising with other local agencies and supports

  • providing information, referrals, and resources such as school information and disability-related groups/information individually and through parent information sessions on various topics on a regular basis

  • facilitating a range of community based inclusive activities for children, youth and adults

  • connecting parents for mutual support and planning

Summer programs for children:
  • The Camp Inclusion Program provides support to enable children aged 6 to 12 to attend regular day camps with their non-disabled peers
Community Connections:
  • Family Support Workers belong to the local Family Support Community Network and provincial Family Support Workers of Ontario Association, which promote the sharing of information about programs across the city and province.

The Benefits:

Navigating services and supports for your loved one can be challenging. Having someone from Family Support on your team can give you confidence and tools you need to keep your family strong.
