What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is a Community Living Kingston and District program that supports adults with an intellectual disability to live in their own homes in the community. Most people rent their own apartment and can be supported in all areas associated with independent living. Supports are provided on an individualized basis. Support workers self schedule to allow for flexibility in supports.

Support is provided by the equivalent of four full-time Community Support Workers. An average caseload is about ten individuals. Support workers work 80 hours in two weeks. A support worker might see some individuals five times a week and other individuals once every other week. Each worker self-schedules to accommodate their caseload, making the best use of time available.

What Kind of Support is Provided?

With the consent of the individual and their family, and after discussion with the SIL team, the support may include:
  • Assistance with and teaching activities of daily living
  • Assistance with menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking
  • Assistance with laundry
  • Assistance with health care appointments and help to follow through on recommendations
  • Monitoring medications
  • Assistance with accessing income programs, managing finances, paying bills, filing income tax returns, and other legal matters
  • Accessing community resources, for recreation, work, school, and health, e.g. Community Care Access Centre
  • Assistance securing appropriate living accommodations and adapting environment, if necessary
  • Assistance with community integration
  • Encouragement of individuals to act responsibly as citizens of the community
  • Liaison with families, private home providers, friends and advocates
